Today as I was sitting at the balcony of my room and enjoying the chilled air that shivered my bones, I thought about the Indian Rock/Metal music scene in the country and what it was like a decade back. I realized that I don't have any idea about it, may be because in those days I never cared to bother about it. But as I started taking music more seriously and experience it more vastly the more I realized that its not just another passion. Surely not for those who dedicate their whole life trying to give us quality music. Music that give us hope, music that tell us tales and music that makes us think. These musicians don't earn much money from their music and neither do they expect so. they believe in sharing their music for free with those who want to have it and anyone who respect it. These musicians are called independent musicians and their music is called Indie- Music. It covers everything from Rock-n-Roll to Folk Rock to Electronica.
Since the day I remembered listening to my first Indian Rock song, I've seen it growing. From the days when any Indian band playing live is a very rare site, now they are seen headlining in almost every major college fest. Yes it came a long way and with every passing time these musicians have matured a lot. Matured because now they don't fear to experiment with classical instruments like tabla, flute etc. and also started to produce Folk tunes with their guitars. This also shows their respect to their ethical roots. Every year more bands are forming, more OC's are being written and more websites are available for them to share their music globally. Also more albums are being released every year, most of these are self produced while some are able to find recording labels to produce them. As a result more fans are following them and so more bands are getting more gigs and also awards both national and international. With all this happening within no more time than a decade, I started believing that the time is not very far when Indian Indie music will be recognized internationally and in the coming years they will be compared with the big guns of world music. But till then what they need is a little patience and little support from the fans i.e. from “US”.
